Rising 6th Grade Academic Transition Information & Activities Timeline
| Virtual Middle School Information Night October 25, 2022 |
Families of students entering middle school in the fall of 2023 will learn about the transition to middle school, core classes, electives, and extracurriculars. Families interested in option schools/programs or neighborhood transfers will learn about the application and lottery process. View recording here |
| Middle School Information Sessions: Dates Vary December 2022 – January 2023 |
Each school hosts an in-person and/or virtual information session to provide families the opportunity to meet the staff, learn more about the school, and ask questions. All families of rising middle school students are encouraged to attend an information session hosted by their neighborhood school and option school they are interested in. See full schedule here |
| Middle Schools Visit Elementary Schools February 2023 |
A middle school counselor will be coming to your elementary school to present on the school and course request forms. HB Woodlawn does NOT come to visit since they have their own timelines and orientations. |
| Course Request Forms Due to Middle Schools Monday, March 6, 2023 |
CRFs are the forms the 5th graders will use to request their courses for 6th grade. These forms are to be filled out with their parent(s) or caregiver(s). CRFs will be digital on Google Forms, accessed through Canvas. |
| 5th Grade Grouping Cards TBD – Likely May |
“Grouping Card” spreadsheets communicate academic levels, interventions, IEP or 504, or social-emotional or behavioral needs. They are completed collaboratively by 5th grade teachers and student services staff. |

Option Middle Schools & Programs Application Closes- January 13, 2023
- Applications accepted until 1/13/23 at 4 p.m. Any applications received after this deadline will be added to the end of the waitlist.
Option Middle Schools & Programs Lottery – January 13, 2023
- The 2023-24 school year lotteries for the middle and high school option programs will be held online on Monday, Jan. 23, 2023 at 1 p.m.
- If the number of applications exceed the available seats for any of the Options Schools, APS will conduct a lottery to determine admission.
- If families apply to more than one school/program, their application will go into all lotteries simultaneously.
- Families do NOT receive lottery results on the day of the automated lottery. Families are notified of their acceptance or placement on the waitlist by email and/or text by 4 p.m. on the date in the application timeline.
Neighborhood Transfer Availability Decided – Feb. 2023
- A decision regarding neighborhood transfers will be made in February 2023 after the January enrollment update to the Superintendent and the School Board.
Option Middle Schools & Programs Lottery Notification – January 30, 2023
- Families will be notified of their acceptance or placement on the waitlist by email and/or text by the APS Welcome Center on January 30 , 2023 after 4 p.m.
- If families do not accept or decline their seat by the deadline, their seat will be given to the next student on the waitlist.
Option Middle Schools & Programs Accept/Decline Deadline – February 13, 2023
- Families must confirm or decline attendance to the school or program by February 13, 2023 by 11:59 p.m.
Neighborhood Transfer Application Opens – February 20, 2023
- If neighborhood middle schools (Dorothy Hamm, Gunston, Kenmore, Jefferson, Swanson, or Williamsburg) are accepting neighborhood transfer, the application window opens.
Neighborhood Transfer Application Closes – March 3, 2023
- Applications accepted until 3/3/22 at 4 p.m. Any applications received after this deadline will be added to the end of the waitlist.
Neighborhood Transfer Lottery – March 17, 2023
- The 2022-23 school year lotteries for neighborhood transfer will be held online on March 17, 2022 at 1 p.m.
- If the number of applications exceed the available seats for any of the neighborhood schools, APS will conduct a lottery to determine admission.
- If families apply to more than one school/program, their application will go into all lotteries simultaneously.

- Families will be notified of their acceptance or placement on the waitlist by email and/or text by the APS Welcome Center on March 24, 2023 after 4 p.m.
- If families do not accept or decline their seat by the deadline, their seat will be given to the next student on the waitlist.
